Dr Asumani, Director of Operations, Northern Region Water, Malawi
Asumani Ungwe was born on 20th January 1969. He is a Malawian; married; and has two children.
In 1995, he graduated from Malawi Polytechnic with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. In 2007, he obtained a Master of Science degree in Strategic Management from the University of Derby of the United Kingdom.
Malawi Board of Engineers registered Asumani Ungwe as a Professional Engineer in 2001. In 2011, Malawi Board of Engineers selected Asumani Ungwe to be one of the few professional engineers in Malawi entrusted to train graduate engineers so that they become professional engineers.
From 1995 to 1997, Asumani Ungwe worked with Brunette and Partners, a consulting firm that prepared structural designs for most monumental buildings in Lilongwe, the Capital City of Malawi. From 1998 to date, Asumani Ungwe works for Northern Region Water Board, one of the best water utility companies in Malawi. He currently works as Director of Operations.
Concerned that the quantity and quality of drinking water decreases and deteriorates respectively as time passes after commissioning of water supply systems, and yet there was no framework for addressing all the factors that caused this problem, Asumani Ungwe conducted an in-depth research to find a solution. He developed a framework for sustainability management of the recommended quality and quantity of drinking water. It is based on this research that the University of Bolton of the United Kingdom conferred a PhD on Asumani Ungwe in April 2015.
